Meet Boanerges
Well here's a wee story to make you smile. Into my email box dropped this picture, it was sent to me from Jimmy Sommerville. Jimmy and I played in the Living Stones for a number of years from 1964 to the mid 70s. I forgot all about this picture.It the old van that makes me smile. We called it Boenerges after James and John in the Bible, they were known as the Sons of Thunder. Our old van certainly sounded like thunder when it started up.
I remember on one occasion we travelled all the way to fort William to play. On the return journey we developed a oil leak. The sump tray that holds the oil somehow came loose and fell off along the road, we didn't discover this until the oil light appeared. Now were were fortunate to have a time served motor mechanic in the band, Campbell Barrie. In those days these old vans had access to the engine from inside. Campbell soon sussed out that there was no sump because you could see the road whizzing by from the cabin of the van. We pulled into a garage and managed to get a huge drum of old engine oil. Well for the next 80 miles or so we poured the oil through the engine and made an oil trail all the way back to Glasgow. i shudder now to think of the number of accidents we might have caused.
